    An opening ceremony was held for new students at the Yuquan Campus of the Graduate University of CAS (GUCAS) on Sept. 12 in the western outskirt of Beijing.

    In the coming semester 11,349 graduate students newly enrolled by GUCAS will start their journey in scientific investigations. Some 5,025 of them are admitted to doctoral programs.

     The ceremony, chaired by DENG Yong, Secretary of GUCAS CPC Committee, was attended by BAI Chunli, CAS executive vice president and GUCAS president, CHEN Jia'er, director of the Physics School, ZHU Daoben, head of the Chemistry School, LIU Yi, director of CAS Bureau of Personnel and Education, among a number of prestigious professors and leaders.

     BAI began his welcome speech by extending a warm welcome to the freshmen. Then he gave a general picture to the yesterday and today of CAS and GUCAS, focusing on their leading roles in China's scientific research and scientist cultivation. Finally, he provided encouragements and expectations to the students, calling for diligence, honesty, pursuit for scientific truth and the spirit of innovation.

     CHEN and ZHU also offered their congratulations to the audience and expressed hopes for them to study hard and cultivate a spirit of independent thinking as well as a positive way of living. Representatives of the teachers, senior students, freshmen and overseas students also spoke at the ceremony.

     The number of new students at GUCAS this year stood at the level of last year (11,214), showing a transition from the stage of expanding in scale over the past five years (2001-2005) to that underlines the quality of graduate education.

     Backed by CAS as the national research center, GUCAS has become the largest and top-ranking graduate university in China since its establishment in 2001.
